When to Move Your Baby from a Bassinet to a Crib

Check bassinet limits, rolling milestones, room sharing, and crib setup, with a practical plan for changing sleep spaces.

Parents prepare an empty wooden crib while the mother securely holds their awake baby.

The short answer

Move your baby from their bassinet when they reach any of its manufacturer's stopping limits or a developmental stopping point in your local safety guidance, whichever happens first. There is no single month that makes every bassinet suitable until then. A crib can also be used from birth if it is approved for that use and set up correctly. Health Canada: cribs, cradles and bassinets

The question usually arrives at an inconvenient moment. Your baby looks longer in the bassinet, a hand keeps touching the side, or a new roll appears during play. Meanwhile, the crib is still holding clean laundry. You need a safe decision and a manageable next step, not a perfect nursery transformation.

The most helpful distinction is between changing the sleep surface and changing the whole routine. You can move to an appropriate crib while keeping many of the familiar parts of bedtime.

Start with the instructions for your exact model

Find the label with the model name or number and locate its official manual. Read the use restrictions, not just the product description on a retailer's page. Different products and attachments can have different limits.

Make a small checklist with four entries: weight, height, age if specified, and developmental skills. Copy the actual stopping conditions rather than an approximate age suggested by another parent. If one limit has been reached, the others do not cancel it out.

In Canada, Health Canada's guidance says to transition from a bassinet when a baby can roll over, as well as following manufacturer limits. Elsewhere, consult your local safety authority and the exact product manual. Do not transfer a limit from a visually similar bassinet or assume that every attachment on a travel system is approved for unattended sleep. Health Canada: when to transition

If the manual is missing or unclear, contact the manufacturer before using the product further and use an available suitable sleep space. “It still looks roomy” is not a substitute for the permitted use.

Does moving to a crib mean moving to another room?

No. The bed and the room are separate decisions. US guidance recommends sharing your room, with your baby on a separate sleep surface, for at least the first six months. Moving out of a bassinet does not end that recommendation. NICHD: room sharing

Before deciding there is no space, measure the actual room and the assembled dimensions of a suitable crib. Think about access for feeding and the position of cords or furniture, rather than only where the bassinet used to stand. If you need a smaller approved option, check local standards and the manufacturer's limits before purchasing or borrowing it.

Product rules are not identical everywhere. For example, US guidance includes compliant play yards as sleep spaces, while Health Canada does not recommend ordinary playpens for sleep. Choose according to the rules where you live, rather than treating the words “portable” or “travel” as safety approval. CPSC: safe sleep products and Health Canada: product guidance

Prepare the crib before you need it

The safety essentials are a compliant product, correct assembly, the right firm and flat mattress, a fitted sheet, and an otherwise clear sleep space. Check recalls, particularly if the crib is borrowed or secondhand. Do not add a nest, pillow, rolled blanket, or bumper to make a larger crib feel smaller. CPSC: clear infant sleep spaces

Here is a practical preparation sequence:

  • Find the manual and confirm that every part belongs to this model.
  • Assemble the crib exactly as instructed and choose the mattress position required for your baby's development.
  • Fit the correct mattress and sheet; leave decorative bedding out.
  • Check the position of blind cords, monitor cables, and nearby furniture.
  • Show every caregiver the finished setup and where clean sheets are stored.

Follow the manual for future changes to mattress height as your baby becomes more mobile. A mattress position that worked at birth may not remain suitable. Health Canada: setting up a crib

Preparing early does not mean you must change a safe setup immediately. It means you will not be searching for screws at bedtime when your baby reaches a stopping limit.

Make the change without rebuilding bedtime

If the bassinet remains within every limit, you can choose a convenient time to introduce the crib. If it is already outgrown, use the safe replacement immediately; gradual familiarity should never extend unsafe use.

Keep your plan small. Use the familiar song, usual feeding response, and the same simple goodnight phrase. These are practical ways to make the evening understandable, not a promise that a baby will accept the crib within a certain number of nights.

You do not need to introduce independent settling, night weaning, a new nap schedule, and a new sleep surface together. A move required for equipment safety is not a deadline to teach another skill. Offer the care your baby needs, then place them on their back in the crib for sleep.

For example, a family might prepare the crib during the day, confirm the setup together, and use their existing bedtime sequence that evening. The only planned change is where the baby sleeps. If a feed is needed overnight, they respond as usual. This is an organizational example, not a prescribed sleep method.

If the first night is unsettled

Check ordinary needs before assuming that the crib itself is the problem. Does your baby need a feed, a diaper change, comfort, or assessment for illness? What changed besides the sleep surface? A busy outing or a different caregiver may be relevant context, but a log cannot diagnose the reason for waking.

Keep notes brief: when sleep began, what happened during waking, and what helped. Two lines that another caregiver can understand are more useful than a complicated scoring system. Our guide to changes in a baby's sleep routine offers a way to organize those observations.

Avoid making the crib softer or adding restraints because the first attempt was difficult. If you feel yourself getting sleepy while holding your baby, place them in their safe sleep space and arrange support if possible. Sofas and armchairs are particularly hazardous when an adult falls asleep with a baby. NICHD: safer sleep and caregiver fatigue

Common questions

Does touching the side mean the bassinet is too small?

A hand touching a side does not tell you all the product's limits. Use the manufacturer's actual criteria and local guidance. Equally, a baby can still look small when a developmental stopping condition has already been reached. Appearance should not overrule instructions in either direction.

Can I keep using the bassinet for daytime naps?

If a stopping limit has been reached, do not keep it for naps. The same equipment restrictions apply when an adult is nearby. Prepare suitable sleep arrangements for each place your baby is cared for, including a grandparent's home.

What if my baby has just started rolling?

Review the bassinet rules and stop swaddling at the first signs of trying to roll, following AAP advice. Our separate guide explains rolling and sleep position, including why you continue to start sleep on the back. AAP: safe sleep recommendations

Is the move supposed to improve sleep?

The purpose is a suitable sleep space as your baby grows. Better sleep is not guaranteed, and a difficult night does not mean you made the wrong safety decision. If settling difficulties persist or you are unsure about your baby's needs, ask their healthcare professional for help. The Bambii Sleep Academy can support your understanding of routines alongside that care.
