Introducing common allergens · 7 min read
What order should I introduce allergenic foods?
Current AAP and NIAID guidance on introducing common allergens, including when to ask a pediatrician about peanut introduction.

A cautious sequence for an ordinary-risk baby
- Confirm readiness for solids: Readiness varies. Ask your baby's clinician if you are uncertain, especially after prematurity or with chewing or swallowing concerns.
- Offer an infant-safe form: Whole nuts and thick spoonfuls of nut butter are choking hazards. Use textures and preparation suitable for the baby.
- Introduce one new food at a time: AAP parent guidance recommends waiting at least a day before another new food so a possible reaction is easier to identify.
- Keep tolerated foods in the diet: AAP guidance describes continued, regular servings after successful introduction, using developmentally appropriate portions.
Who should ask a clinician first
NIAID guidance recommends that infants with severe eczema, egg allergy, or both be evaluated with their healthcare provider before peanut introduction, which may be recommended as early as 4–6 months. A baby with an earlier food reaction or another diagnosed allergy also needs individual guidance.
What to record—and what not to decide alone
Record the food, preparation, time offered, and what you observed. A log cannot decide whether a symptom is an allergy. Trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden widespread hives, facial swelling, or other signs of a severe reaction need emergency help; follow any allergy action plan you have been given.
