Baby-led weaning or purées: how do I choose?
An AAP-aligned comparison of baby-led weaning and purées, including readiness, choking risk, nutrition, and why a mixed approach is valid.
Published and reviewed September 3, 2026 · Bambii Editorial Team
What differs
- Baby-led weaning: The baby self-feeds appropriately prepared foods and controls the pace and amount.
- Purées and spoon-feeding: A caregiver offers smooth or mashed foods, with textures progressing as the baby's skills develop.
- A mixed approach: Families can combine self-feeding and spoon-feeding. AAP guidance explicitly notes that flexibility is acceptable.
- The shared goal: Both approaches should support safe texture progression, responsive feeding, and adequate nutrition.
The safety questions matter more than the label
The AAP notes that some studies do not find higher choking risk with baby-led weaning, but also emphasizes that choking is a serious risk and that food preparation matters. Use soft, age-appropriate shapes and textures; avoid round, hard, sticky, or otherwise hazardous foods; seat the baby securely; and learn how to respond to choking.
A baby born prematurely or with difficulty sitting, chewing, or swallowing needs individual guidance before starting or changing textures.
What to track
Record foods offered, preparation or texture, and observable responses. Include iron-rich and energy-dense foods in planning rather than assuming self-feeding automatically provides enough. A record cannot assess swallowing safety, growth, nutritional adequacy, or an allergic reaction.
